you say run
Life has always been cruel.
You wouldn't have known this, not at such a tender age. Head filled with dreams and eyes with stars as you reviewed that famous video of your favorite hero. That has always been your dream, to be come a legendary savior of the city. But it isn't due to fame or fortune.
You simply wish to help, the same way he did as he stood proudly on the scene of the crime with nothing but a smile to go along with it. You have never been so happy as you sit in that chair that felt just a little too big for your tiny body as your eyes remained glued onto the computer screen. You wanted nothing more in the world than to be just like him.
Life is so cruel.
You wouldn't have known that your lineage would've given you the Joker of the deck of cards, leaving you with nothing but shattered hopes. Something inside of you broke, but you weren't quite sure what it might be. Your mother comforts you, but that isn't what you need.
Your wish, more than anything, will never be heard now upon finding out that you are nothing but Quirkless. You are nothing more and nothing less than ordinary, and there will never be anything that can change that. You are not special like those superheroes that are shown on TV.
You are not one of those people who will be the talk of the town, you will not be the one who will be the runner up to be noticed by him, All Might. Quirks have always been the food chain society has followed for as long as people can remember. It divides social class, popularity, and most of all.. importance.
You are at the bottom of that line, no matter how painful it is. But you keep a smile on your face with the same wish engraved in the depths of your heart and soul. While you may not have a Quirk, you still have your dreams. You are determined to be the one who can attend a unique school for those who've been graced with special abilities.
You remember every day you're not special.
At least he reminds you. Your childhood friend, or at least.. he used to be. He had been someone you looked up to, someone you wanted to view as nothing more than a Hero, yet he became nothing more than a bully. To you, no less.
His anger festered in the form of power, utilizing it at his expense whenever he wanted. Intimidation had become his specialty. With careless words and hateful actions, you felt that wall you built around yourself grow thicker. You wanted to shield yourself within it and believe that something this could change.
They didn't. They simply became harder.
Those relentless, teasing words cut deep. Your heart bled from anguish, drumming down the possibilities that maybe you could become someone new. Fate has a way of twisting the plot around you without you realizing it until the last second, this much you have noticed the second everything became a blur. In a matter of seconds both villain and hero clashed. A whirlwind.
That's how it felt the moment your eyes fell on none other than All Might himself. You didn't want to become an inconvenience, yet you couldn't help yourself. You were the cause for making his profession more difficult. It's all you, it's always been you. It's your fault the captive villain escaped, it's your fault that All Might got hurt in the process of taking the perpetrator into custody.
It's you, it's always been you. And you know what? You were also the reason why Kacchan got hurt. Kacchan, the one who bullied you to no end, became rendered to nothing more than another victim because of your selfish actions. You didn't have the heart to leave him there without any kind of aid, even if you didn't have a Quirk. You didn't know what came over you, but in that second, you realized that it takes more than just powers to build a hero.
With a pounding heart, you reached towards a new future where you can also be someone. You inspired many, even if your actions were reckless. You wanted nothing more than to belong, and your desire became heard by none other than your one and only idol. It brought you the utmost joy. It swelled up inside of you, choking your sobs with relief.
You could be someone, you could mean something, you could stand on your own two feet without really needing some magnificent power to define you. You could be a hero too. Those were the words you needed all those years ago. They were comforting, warm, and they gave you hope that your life wasn't as insignificant as you once thought.
However, heroes aren't born overnight.
It took arduous training to reach that steep summit that awaited you. All Might offered guidance, suggestions, and important tips you completely took to heart. It didn't matter how hard the training became, you wanted to achieve your goal no matter the cost. It all felt like a dream once you stood there, proudly taking in the fruit of your work. However, setbacks were bound to appear in your path which almost managed to cost you your enrollment.
Not a single thing could've prepared you from the challenges the entry exam entailed. Robots have never really been your forte, considering you have mostly seen criminals who are mostly flesh and blood. Granted, there were many whose features were a lot similar to those of regular animals among other strange structural body types, but never something that consisted of a large machine with nothing but a deep intent to destroy all of its opponents when they were located in sight.
Your legs trembled in fear, unsure what your plan of attack could be while your thoughts scrambled for something concrete. An idea to get through this preliminary. You didn't want to let your mentor down, much less when you were practically knocking on a great door like that of UA. You felt your body tremble in nervousness, but that didn't stop you from leaping into action to save a life. A girl you met on your way inside of the school.
She played a great part of it all. A girl whose name reminded you of a sugar cube within a freshly brewed coffee on a Sunday morning. She enraptured you with her presence, but the one thing that struck you the most had been her dedication, her determination. It drove her forward, similarly to your own ambition. In more ways that one,
Uraraka reminded you of yourself. If it wasn't for her, you probably wouldn't have been accepted in the first place.
While defeating your opponent takes great priority in order to save countless lives in the long run, you also need to take note of those who are around you at the scene. It became your saving grace the moment you launched an attack and Uraraka saved you. Something mutual. You managed to be accepted thanks to this.
In contrast, you didn't exactly passed due to your powers, but you were accepted nonetheless. It might've not meant much to someone else, but being accepted into this academy meant everything to you. It'd been the school where All Might attended and graduated. You wanted to continue walking in his footsteps, to become someone who could protect the people, and someone others could look up to with stars in their eyes the same way you did once upon a time.
You aren't the same defenseless child anymore. You, and everyone around you, can tell how much you have grown up as a man. No man is created equal, this much you know for certain, yet that isn't going to stop you. You may not have a fancy quirk, and you may not be as strong as a lot of people out there, but one thing still reigns true and that is your heart.
It's a bit comical to others when it comes to someone who takes the entire thing far serious than it should be. Though, you can't seem to help but look up to him, admire his pride when he speaks among the rest of your classmates. Someone who is sure of what he wants from others, of what the plans are, someone who is equipped with a good head on strong shoulders. That's probably what makes you want to understand Iida a bit more. To dig deeper and learn the things he knows but doesn't really project in fear of being shunned.
You can tell that he shares your same sentiment when it comes to this profession. He wants to try harder, to strive to become someone great in his own version of a hero. To live up to expectations. It's something you wish to share with someone like Bakugou, but you know he won't listen to pointless chatter. Or so that is what he calls it. No matter what he throws at you, it doesn't deter you from try to reach him.
It is your strongest asset, forgiving and aiding those in need. Even extending a helping hand to your own bully, regardless of how many times he smacked it aside. To him, you represent nothing but a worthless bug that can't seem to escape his site. You can prove him wrong by paving the way with your bare hands. You are not afraid anymore. No matter how much he yells, no matter how many times he throws insult after insult in your direction, he isn't the nightmare that chased every single one of your waking moments.
He is not the monster you tried to hide away from anymore. He is your rival, your equal, your foe, your friend. He may not see it that way, and you understand that completely well. You strive for the same thing, and that alone makes you respect him all the more. Sure, he has his horrible tendencies of lashing out before he says something relatively nice, you know that.
Bakugou has never really been one to be nice.
Both of you remained at odds, but you felt a newborn desire to surpass him flare in the pits of your stomach. You knew that you had a long way to go, but his intimidation wasn't going to stop you from taking one step on after the next. UA became the turning point of your life, the door that led you to come face to face with the embodiment of malevolence. The place where you realized that heroes are up against something much greater than anything you have ever dreamed of. They planned an attack to overthrow the symbol of peace, the guardian of justice, and your mentor.
You could feel the trembling in your veins, the human part of you wanting to flee from everything that you fear, and yet you stay to protect the idealism one person who believed in you. You wanted to prove to those villains that no matter what they did you could come out victorious. It took far more than you bargained for, almost costing humanity the life of the pinnacle of hope they know as All Might after showing up to save the day from tremendously powerful foes.
You were separated from your classmates, paired up with two others you never really interacted with. Your abilities were mismatched, but with proper and further analysis you come to establish a plan that could help your trio escape from an attack. She shares her intellect, being far smarter than what she displayed. She insists you call her Tsu, but you can't seem to bring yourself to do so. You hold respect for her, and because of this you stumble on her name. Of course, you bring yourself to succumb to her wishes eventually.
She as well as your remaining classmate, Mineta, manage to escape the predicament, leaving nothing but a shipwreck in your wake. While he might seem like a coward, he showed true bravery when facing evil. Mineta reminded you of himself, the same way Uraraka has countless of times, when it comes to being afraid of something. You can't really blame any of them, for such a line of profession costs great sacrifices. Sometimes even ones life in order to save countless of others.
It's something that your homeroom teacher, Aizawa, came to display the moment he placed himself on the battlefield in order to offer cover for the rest of the student body to make their appearance and back him up. He knew full well that he wasn't going to be able to fend off all of those powerful villains, but he still tried. He tried with every single breath his lungs could take. With every single fiber of his being. He knew and he understood that he probably wasn't going to be able to come out of this alive.
But it didn't stop him from trying to protect his students.
The grotesque sights of your teacher being pummeled to the ground made your body quiver in uncertainty, not knowing what you could possibly do to help him get through this. But if it wasn't for your efforts as well as those of your superiors All Might probably wouldn't have pulled through. The enemy proved itself to be far stronger than any of you anticipated. An encounter alone didn't waver your undying will for a single minute. Instead, it fed the fire of your determination.
The fire that burned brightly in the highly anticipated tournament of heroes where students competed against each other in order to be noticed by agencies, boosting up popularity among other things. However, you didn't wish for anything of the sort, for all you had in your mind became clear the moment All Might handed down his mantel to you. You were to become his successor, the person whom he'd leave in charge of protecting justice, of keeping innocent lives safe.
With this single step you were about to become a true hero. All eyes were set on center stage: on you. Your opponent being nothing more than perfect, and you knew that. You knew that Todoroki's abilities were nothing to joke around about. Seriousness sank into the atmosphere surrounding the two of you as you stood in that ring, awaiting the next move to take place. You couldn't really tell what came over you, but something in him made you reach out and try to bring him out of that darkened place.
Words that were exchanged became enough to offer a glimpse of the pain he'd been shouldering as the son of the second greatest hero. You weren't in it for the title, that much remained sure. But that didn't mean that you were about to hand him down the spot you've been fighting so much to reach as someone to look up to. Regardless of how much your body ached with each and every blow he inflicted, you wanted nothing more than to treat this match as the real thing. Until.. your entire world just went blank. A brilliant light illuminated your surroundings and you weren't sure what'd happened.
It has already been a year since that incident happened, yet it feels as if it were yesterday. You don't exactly know how,
but somewhere along the way you wound up being transported to an entirely different planet. It proved itself to be rather hard to grow accustomed to, but life here isn't all that bad. Or so you came to realize. Sure, you miss your home,
your friends, your mom.. everyone, really. Nevertheless, you still hold your head up high, no matter where you may be. You want to prove to yourself that you have come a long way and that nothing can push you off the path you are now walking.
For heroes aren't just born that way,
but the heart of a hero can be.
