there were very few things jupiter was actually confident about in her life. granted, she hardly ever came off as anything but modest about some things, and she wasn't going to be the first person who said she was bad at something. even so, jupiter was aware of her actual strengths, which made it a lot easier and less stressful for her to actually participate without much worry and not need to internally berate herself all the time every single time she screwed up even a little bit. sure, neptune was trying to get her to loosen up and accept things a bit better than she was used to. it was hard to say no to her when neptune was one of the only people who knew what she was actually like on the inside, knew how much she beat herself up constantly for the smallest things because the last thing she wanted was to be seen as a disappointment. what could she say? both neptune and venus had seen her at her worst, seen her cry over her failures more than once. being able to trust someone after all that was practically impossible to do. she wasn't about to say that she was anywhere near being better at being more truthful with herself and others, though. that one night in the cabin may as well have changed her life, sure, but she still needed time to grow more into herself. baby steps and all that. jupiter honestly didn't think she could go much faster than that anyway.
either way, playing any kind of sport was one of the few things jupiter had some pride in, because she was actually pretty adept at it. just give her a ball, any kind of ball, and she was golden. she wasn't one of those girls who hated to get dirty or rough it up a little, and - to be honest - sitting still sometimes made her anxious so doing something like, say, playing soccer, was perfect to let out any energy she might have been carrying. admittedly, she was probably more into baseball than anything else, but it wasn't really a preference, more like a favorite. soccer could be challenging in its own right, especially with just two people playing. jupiter was more than a little biased when it came to neptune and venus, choosing them over almost anything else more often than not. combined with the lack of an ability to say no to much of anything after their time in summer scouts, jupiter really had to reason to say no to neptune wanting to play soccer together. honestly, had she not known neptune any better, jupiter wouldn't think that she would be into that kind of thing. neptune was surprising like that almost all the time. it was like she was constantly pulling stuff out to keep everyone on their toes, which definitely sounded like something neptune would and had done in the past. jupiter couldn't complain; neptune was always fun to be around no matter what the three of them decided to do. also, trying to resist just made neptune try a lot harder to get everyone to agree with her so it was better to just go with it most of the time.
bouncing the ball on her knee a couple times, jupiter let the ball fall to the ground and held it under her foot as she cupped her hands around her mouth and asked, "you ready?" in a tone loud enough for neptune to hear. jupiter was pretty much ready to go whenever, her hair tie already holding back her hair into a loose ponytail; she didn't think she'd have a reason to need it for its other use right that moment. hopefully, at least. she always was much more at ease whenever she did stuff like this. less time to think about much besides playing the game. they didn't really have a goalie anyway, using two trees as makeshift goals instead, so it probably wouldn't be a very serious game. at least, not until the both of them became competitive, which was bound to happen any time now. jupiter was already feeling the urge to win well up gradually inside her, though it wasn't really necessary at all. having fun was cool and all, and jupiter preferred to handle games with a bit of salt so she wouldn't end up getting upset as easily as she normally would but this was neptune she was playing against here. who knew what would end up happens. jupiter grinned wide, showing off her teeth and taking a moment to tighten up a her ponytail a bit just in case. "you should prepare to get your butt kicked, neptune." laughing she continued, "coach doesn't always pick me first for nothing." she was glad to see that, in some cases, living in an entire different place didn't change all that much. she had to admit that getting away from her parents, or particularly her mom, was nice in a way. she missed them from time to time, but she still felt so much better having some of the pressure off, if only a little bit. she would likely still be pressured in some way, but at least she didn't have to think about what her mom might say if she found out her own daughter was getting away from what she believed in by dating two girls instead of hooking up with some boy. ugh, just thinking about it was super gross.
