sometimes you sit and wonder what your life would be like, what you would be like if you had grown up in a different world, a world where faunus are treated as equals and accepted. you could have been a happy child, affectionate, playful, not introverted, antisocial, and guarded. but you were not born that fortunate.
for you, everything begins and ends with the color red. red is the color of blood that hits the ground at your feet from the young man standing next to you, he's holding his face now. moments ago he was shouting, waving his sign up and down in the air just like you. but fights often break out at these things, even though the protests are meant to be pacifistic, peaceful, legal. some humans just don't believe in that, they lash out, because they believe you and your people are less than. you're too young to understand it then, the hatred people can hold in their hearts. but you will know soon enough.
they want to corral you all in menagerie, and leave you all there, using you as they so please and leaving you to die as they wish. the white fang, a faunus civil rights activist group, you were born into it, your parents were members and so are you. they take you to protests but if and when things turn ugly your always taken away, crushed into your father's chest as he and your mother flee to protect you. but you see the spilled blood, and you see the damage it does, damage that is more than just skin deep, but you don't see the foreshadowing of your future that rings true every time.
chaos, your world breaks out into chaos. when you parents are taken from you too soon. you feel as though you have lost everything, you have nothing left. your only family now is the other members of the white fang and they care for you like they do all those orphaned by the cruel world you all live in.
determined. confident. passionate. courageous. energetic.
your whole world is the white fang, they are all you have, and all you know. so of course you dedicate your life to the group and to the cause. adam enters your life then, the bull faunus is all fire, all passion, all his focus, energy and time is given to the cause, his very will ensnares you, his words entice you, he has you eating out of the palm of his hand before you even know it. he takes you under his wing, he makes you feel special, trains you, asks for your help on missions, values your thoughts, opinion, and input. he represents a more hands on approach to the cause, and you didn't see it then, but a much more dangerous approach at that. when your old leader dies you don't even fear for the group as adam steps up and takes over. it's a new age.
the time of sitting back and wishing is over, no more peaceful rallies and protests. adam wants to do more, he takes the group down a different path, one you were more than willing to help him with. at first. in the beginning it was just little things, a mission gone wrong here, an accidental casualty as a result, human, but a life none the less. adam tells you it wasn't meant to happen, and that it won't again, but it does. again and again, on bigger scales until you just can't ignore it. the discomfort, the dissatisfaction, the hatred for what the white fang has become it's been building up for a while and it hit home the day of the dust heist. a cargo train full of schnee dust is the target, the company abuses faunus, using them for work but mistreating, overworking, and underpaying them.
you went in thinking it was a simple mission, you didn't know about the bomb, not until adam tells you. that was the last straw for you and even still you managed to hesitate. the thought of causing the death of innocent people you couldn't deal with that when it was an accident, much less so if it was on purpose, and here adam was telling you he was going to set the bomb to take out the crew of the train. you couldn't allow that. before cutting the cart with adam and the bomb loose, you looked at him, and it was only a split second but in that second you relived every moment with him. every morning spent training, sparring with him, growing with him, every talk you had that led the two of you to grow closer, every speech he made that inspired you, the eventual kisses the two of you shared, and then all the lies. you realize then what you should have seen before, adam was all the red you had witnessed in your life, the blinding rage, the puffy eyes looking back at you in the mirror when you've been crying, the blood on the streets of your fellow faunus, the blood of the humans he's killed already and the one's he will kill in the future. in that second you see that you can't continue to stand by him.
the look on his face as the two of you grow farther apart as you continue on on the train that is leaving him behind, is one you'll never forget. because of him you think that red can only ever be bad. it isn't until later that you realize that that is not the case at all.
open. simplistic. equality. self-sufficient. innocent.
a blank slate, that's the only thing you want now. you wish to write the wrongs you've been made a part of, to make the world a better place for all those who live in it. you remember how pure and untainted your parents were, how the old white fang leader was, how all they wanted was equality for your people and how they never stooped so low as to hurt others to get there. you ask yourself how you could have strayed so far off from that path, but know that the past isn't worth investigating, the future is all you have. you had betrayed adam, and now you have nothing left to lose and everything to gain.
traveling to vale you take the entrance exams that will allow you to become a student at beacon academy. you have set a new goal for yourself, become a huntress, right the wrongs of this world. you started dawning bows from the very beginning, over your black cat ears, you want people to judge you for you and not the fact that you are a faunus. perhaps showing the world that faunus care and can protect the world you all [should] share is the way to go about things. you never expected to meet the youngest schnee heiress in the courtyard of the academy, you were just walking along reading your book when you heard the commotion. first impressions are made and she is exactly who and what you figured she would be. when all is said and done you take off not even really bothering with the small girl in red who had been the source of all the chaos.
you know what your goals are, make it through school and become a huntress. making friends is not a priority, in fact it's one of the last things you wanted. of course you knew that you would eventually be placed with a team, but you still wanted to distance yourself. the way you see it, you betrayed adam, yes that is undeniable, but he betrayed you first, with all the lies and how he changed into someone you view as a monster. you can't allow yourself to get hurt like that again. it's not even an option.
distant. critical. immaculate. cautious. isolated.
rwby. your team consists of you and three other young women, the schnee heiress, the little red ball of chaos, and her older sister, yang, who was your initial partner after the two of you locked eyes in the woods during the initiation. you never thought your life could be more hectic than it was when you were with the white fang, but being at beacon gave your theory a run for it's money. not too long after classes started you met sun, a fellow faunus, and of course weiss goes off about how he is a tyrant, deviant, miscreant, and you can't help but feel that she only says these things because he is a faunus.
later that day the two of you get into a heated argument where in you in a roundabout way basically let slip that you area faunus and that you were part of the white fang before, ashamed, you run off. you stay away from the school for the entirety of the weekend, spending this time with sun, who you feel while understand what you are feeling and won't judge you for your past and your involvement with the white fang. of course he doesn't, and you are relieved. numerous dust shops are being hit by robbers in the city lately and everyone think's it's the white fang but you disagree so in a desperate attempt to prove their innocence you convince sun to help you catch the real thieves, and the hunt takes you to a harbor.
the last thing you expect to find is the white fang being lead by a human thug. the color drains from your face until you are white, but you're seeing red, angered by this travesty of a match up your usual calm and rational way of thinking is lost and instead you recklessly rush into the fray of things starting a fight with roman torchwick. ruby and penny show up and help you out but the bad guys get away. your team, no one, seems to be as concerned about it all as you and it makes you angry, causing you to get into a slight argument, until your teammates agree to help you out and you with the addition of sun and his teammate neptune decide to investigate.
being the only faunus you and sun infiltrate a white fang recruitment meeting, where torchwick speaks about the collaboration between him and the white fang. when you and sun hesitate to move onto the stage torchwick recognizes you and sends everyone after you, fleeing, he catches you both with a stolen paladin, but ruby, yang and weiss all show up to help you and using the coordinated attacks you've all been working on together managed to sen torchwick running. thankfully you have holiday from school not long after that because you can think of nothing else besides what is going on with the white fang and stopping and catching torchwick. after that you don't sleep you barely eat, your pa-lour is chalky white with the exceptions of the dark circles you carry under your eyes. by the time classes are about to start back you're a mess and your team is concerned for your health.
protective. serious. mysterious. sophisticated. conservative.
before rwby you could have counted the number of people who cared for you and who you had truly cared for on one hand and most of those were not around for you to care about anymore, or had betrayed your heart. but then you meet these three girls, all so different, crazy, wild, and fierce in their own ways. you didn't plan on caring for them, you remember telling yourself not to get to close. but they worry about you and deep down you come to realize you worry about them too. but all you can think about it stopping the bad guys, and all they are thinking about is the dance coming up and you want no part of that, not even when they basically hold and intervention for you.
nothing really gets through to you until yang pulls you aside to have a talk with you about slowing down. you don't want to hear it, you're the only one who cares, the only one who is focused on the end game. but she tells you about her past and how she hasn't given up on her own goals since she was a little girl and that she won't, but she learned to slow down and that you should too. it really doesn't sink in though, until she asks you what you would do if roman torchwick showed up right then and pushes you after you tell her that you would fight. it takes you far longer to recover from the push than it normally would have because of your fatigue and seeing that she hugs you, telling you to rest for the people you care about.
it's then that you realize just how much you care about your new "friends". it's then that you realize just how much your partner means to you, how she gets you on a level you didn't quite see, one that shouldn't even be possible considering how withdrawn you've been with her and everyone else. but she sees you, this reckless, brash, in your face girl. she is your opposite in so many ways and that's why she's probably the only one who could make you listen, and you have to listen because you know she won't stop until you get it through your head. so you do, you rest and the next night you go to the dance, and your first dance is yang's because she said she'd save one for you if you came, and it's the best dance of the night. but you have fun with sun after that. you care for him deeply too, and it makes you start to think about how your new favorite color might be yellow.
optimistic. cowardly. enthusiastic. wise. complex.
the monday after the dance all the first year teams get their first missions, and yours takes you and your teammates to mountain glen. the primary mission is to cut down some grimm, control the population in a way, but also to find the base for the white fang which you know from the intel you all managed to get are in the area. ruby is the one to find them, though it's by accident as she falls through a hold in the ground and gets caught, causing you, blake, weiss and your hunter guide, dr. oobleck to go in and rescue her. you find the white fang loading a train with explosives, numerous stolen paladins and copious amounts of weapons. on torchwick's order they take off when you guys show up, rushing their plan into motion despite not being ready.
without hesitation or fear you climb aboard the train prepared to fight your way up the train to stop it, as it's headed for the city, and every bomb that goes off causes hoards of grimm to fall through the city above and chase after the train, leading them to vale. it's time for a rematch with torchwick and this time you kick his butt, knocking him out before having to rescue weiss from the guy she was taking on, only to crash through a wall leading into the city, you guys were too late. grimm over run the city causing you all to fight to eradicate them before things get out of hand. but this time torchwick is caught, thankfully and when the fight is finally over you and the girls feel accomplished and want to believe that the next biggest worry you guys have is the vytal festival.
little did you know you guys were only half right. the festival starts, and you only compete in the four on four team matches, helping to take the win over your opponents. everything goes down hill after that, but for a moment it's just the calm before the storm. all of it hits the fan during yang's final fight, she won, and the game is over and she attacks her opponent again, breaking his leg and talking mess, and for a moment you vision almost goes black, and your mind races back to adam and how he started his spiral in the same sort of way. you can't even look at her, and she asks you if you believe her and you can't answer her right away. you need her to promise that she saw him attack her first, that she didn't do it to be spiteful, that it was an accident, and you need her to look you in the eye as she says it. thankfully she does, and you can't help but believe her, sighing as the grip on your heart lessens.
confident. impatient. good humored. fun. impulsive.
the next day all hell breaks loose. pyrrah's fight with penny goes horribly wrong, sending the crowd into a frenzy as a voice broadcasts to all the viewers about dissent and lies fed to the people. grimm attack the floating coliseum and the city of vale, breaking through the walls from mt. glen along with white fang soldiers, and eventually the army's knights and paladins which are brought under the control of the enemy. the last thing you ever thought you would find was adam, in the wreckage of the cafeteria. all the of the memories of all of the times that you ran away come to mind as he provokes you and this time instead of running you fight. you've become a much better fighter, haven't you? was he always this good? is your heart, your head in it?
he easily has the upper hand, and has you pinned before you even realize it. you listen to his spiel about taking everything you care about and there being nothing that you can do about it. you weren't suppose to have anything to lose, and then one of the most important pieces of your life shows up. she hears you cry out as adam stabs you and as confident as ever she jumps to your aid, recklessly not even evaluating the situation, even though you tell her to run. she attacks adam and in the blink of an eye she is falling, the action mirrored by adam's sword on his down swing, mirrored by the blonde's severed arm descending through the air. you have no choice but to run now, you can't let her be hurt worse, she's out before she even hits the ground and you have to get her away from him.
with the use of your semblance as a distraction you grab yang and run away. the battle outside has winded down but injured and disheartened you feel your world closing in on you. her arms is gone, your bleeding immensely, you barely feel it though, you're so afraid for her. tears fill your eyes as you apologize to her unconscious form. she'll hate you, ruby will blame you, weiss will judge you, and you can't bear any of that. not them, not your own failure, not your guilt. but really it's her you can't face, you did this to her, how could you? as your world turns to black she's all you can think about, how you can't live with her hating you, anyone but her, your partner,
you yang, and when you wake up you run.
you don't know where you're going and you don't know when you the familiar turned into the unfamiliar. maybe what comes next is just a manifestation of your guilt, maybe you slipped into a coma and to cope this is what your mind came up with. you're in a new land, you don't recognize anything, and you don't know if you want to stay but it appears you can't go back and you aren't sure you want to or should. so you start a new life here, and this time you just want to make amends for all the bad things you've caused. this time you will be simpler, you won't be the hero this time, you'll just be the helper, the healer. you thought you were okay with that, with all of it, but every time you see a flash of yellow hair your heart hurts. every time you see red your torn between wanting to smile and wanting to break down, and every time you see someone with blue eyes you feel as though you can't breath. you miss them and you want adam eradicated. deep down in your heart you know it, something is missing, and you will probably never be happy unless the things you ran from are set right.
if you could run back you would, but you don't know how.
