the waves rolled in, lapping against the shoreline as they always did. overhead seagulls bayed as they argued with one another over who got that last piece of food from the couple that left pieces of bread behind from their picnic. amidst the salty sea spray and the floating foam, haruka found himself peering up from the slightly murky depths closest to shore. sand brushed against his tail in a way that sent shockwaves through the rest of his body and he cursed whatever was going on. it was a weird, new feeling and it was starting to worry him. lightly brushing his hair back from his eyes, the mermaid glanced around and drifted out of sight. he knew his kind wasn't strange, per se, but he also knew that they liked to keep to themselves, so it was rare that anyone ever saw one up at the surface. he also knew the story about certain merfolk walking amongst humans on land and he'd yet to try that--he was nervous, to put it lightly.
months ago, on his first excursion up to the surface he'd accidentally come across a human, almost immediately. he'd panicked of course, and the human had been a bit baffled, but after that first time haru came back topside more often, hoping that he'd see this human again. they were about the same age, though haru didn't really know if mermaid and human ages worked the same; they were in their twenties, at least, he could say that confidently enough. he'd since learned the human's name, and haru knew, unequivocally, that this human was fascinating. he seemed to know so much about everything around them, and the mermaid found himself being drawn further and further into the human world. suffice it to say, any day that he came topside and didn't see his human he was disappointed. it'd been months since then and they'd made a schedule--it was hard for haru to follow it, seeing as how he relied on very different methods to tell "time" where he was from. he was usually forgiven if he was a little late.
today he was sort of hoping that the human could help him figure out what was wrong and why he felt so strangely electrified by everything, but he was also hoping that, maybe, today could be the day he came on land. the idea was the most intimidating thing to haruka, but he wanted to be able to get closer to this pretty human, to actually go do things that he liked, rather than sit around on the beach the whole time. surely he had things he liked to do, maybe that he wanted to do with haruka? folding his arms against a rock, haru gently rest his cheek against them; who was he kidding, surely he had better things to do than spend his time with someone like himself? haru was usually very blunt, he was known for being that way with his friends underwater, and normally he wouldn't hesitate to honestly illustrate how he felt, but they were from two very different worlds. could he really do that to someone that'd lived his whole life on land, that surely had other friends, more important places to be, and undoubtedly tons of people vying for his attention? huffing to himself, haru buried his face in his arms and sighed deeply.
just opening up this thread since i still liked the idea LOL so my idea is that he's a mermaid that his human friend has been visiting for months now and they've totally got The Feels™ for one another but haru's never really come on land before
and also its mating season for mermaids rn so yanno, porn (◡‿◡✿)
